A Benchtop autoclave is a laboratory device that works on the principle of moist heat sterilization, in which the saturated steam is generated under pressure to kill bacteria, viruses, pathogens, and even heat-resistant microorganisms from various types of instruments. They are small laboratory sterilizers designed to provide routine sterilization functions while preserving valuable lab space. This requires heating of instruments with temperatures above the boiling point of water. These also include sterilization of different culture media, solution & water, selective glassware, and biohazardous waste.
